Veterinary tonometry is a procedure for measuring the intraocular pressure of the eye in animals. There are several methods of veterinary tonometry, but the most commonly used is non-contact or applanation tonometry. Non-contact tonometry uses a gust of air or a light pulse to measure intraocular pressure, while applanation tonometry involves gently placing a special sensor on the cornea of the eye and then measuring the response of this structure to pressure. Measuring intraocular pressure is important in the diagnosis and monitoring of eye diseases in animals, such as glaucoma or ciliary body inflammation.
