A test for the rapid and simple detection or exclusion of peritonitis in cats. The test distinguishes transudate from exudate by observing the reaction of a sample of fluid from the abdominal cavity or chest with the solution in a tube. In the presence of proteins characteristic of exudate, tear-like, misty or streak-like shapes form in the solution. Transudate is completely dissolved in solution during sedimentation.

Procedure

Collect the sample using a syringe from the cat's peritoneal cavity or pleura.
Add 3-5 drops of the collected liquid to the dye tube.
Mix the liquid and the dye thoroughly using a dropper.
Open the reaction tube containing the acetic acid solution.
Gently add one drop of the prepared mixture to the reaction tube. Do not shake the test tube!
Read the result.
