James W. Carpenter, MS, DVM, Dipl. ACZM, has been a clinical and research veterinarian for 48 years in the field of exotic animal, wildlife (including endangered species), and zoo animal medicine, has assisted in developing an internationally-recognized program in Zoological Medicine at KSU, and has trained 44 Interns and Residents. He is the author of 185 scientific papers, 47 book chapters, and 250 proceedings articles, and is Co-editor of Ferrets, Rabbits, and Rodents: Clinical Medicine and Surgery (2004;2012; 2021) and is the Editor of the Exotic Animal Formulary (1996, 2001, 2005, 2013, 2018) and Co-editor of the 2023 Carpenter’s Exotic Animal Formulary.  Dr. Carpenter is the Past-President of: the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians, the Association of Avian Veterinarians, and the American College of Zoological Medicine.  He was awarded the Edwin J. Frick Professorship in Veterinary Medicine from the KSU College of Veterinary Medicine in 2002, the Emil Dolensek Award from the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians in 2004, and named the Exotic DVM of the Year for 2000, the T.J. Lafeber Avian Practitioner of the Year for 2012, and the Oxbow Exotic Small Mammal Practitioner Award (Quest Award) in 2019. He was also named a Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2009. In 2013, the Veterinary Health Center (KSU College of Veterinary Medicine) named the new veterinary facility at Manhattan’s Sunset Zoo the “James W. Carpenter Clinic at Sunset Zoo”. Dr. Carpenter is also the former Editor-in-Chief of  both the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine and the  Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery (for 26 years)In 2022, he was awarded the Murray E. Fowler Lifetime Achievement Award by the American College of Zoological Medicine.

Dr. Thomas N. Tully, Jr. is the Paula and Milton W. Shepard Professor in the Veterinary Clinical Sciences Department at Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine (LSU – SVM) where he also serves as Service Chief of the Zoological Medicine Service. Tom received his DVM degree in 1986 from the LSU – SVM and MS degree (Epidemiology and Community Health) in 1991. He is a Diplomate of both the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Avian) and European College of Zoological Medicine (Avian).  Over the last 30 years he has been active in organized veterinary medicine serving on many committees and being elected President of the Association of Avian Veterinarians, European College of Zoological Medicine, and Southwest Veterinary Symposium.  Dr. Tully co-edited numerous books including The Manual of Exotic Pet Practice, Current Therapy in Exotic Pet Practice, Avian Medicine, and Diagnostic Imaging of Exotic Pets, and co-authored A Veterinary Technician’s Guide to Exotic Animal Care as well as authoring and co-authoring numerous chapters in other veterinary medical texts. He was Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Exotic Pet Medicine from 2005-2018. Dr. Tully currently serves as Scientific Editor for the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery.
